Description

Color and Weave Sampler on a Rigid Heddle Loom

Friday, September 29, 10am-2pm

Instructor: Nancy Niemeyer

$55 WGGC members / $80 non-members

Materials Fee: $6 or $8 if purchasing yarn from the instructor (see below). None if you provide your own supplies.

Materials Needed: See list below.

Level: Intermediate. Requires previous weaving experience, You must be able to independently direct warp and weave on a rigid heddle loom or be able to warp and weave on a floor loom.

Class Limit: 5

This class focuses on producing color and weave patterns on a rigid heddle loom. Color and weave effects can bring some interest and sophistication to plain weave and look much more complicated than they are. Some patterns, such as Log Cabin, create a 3D optical illusion. You will create a small sample that will be a valuable reference in designing your own projects.

In this class you will learn to wind a warp on a warping board and to thread the rigid heddle from a cross held in your hand. You will learn to manage weaving with 2 shuttles and how to interlock the yarns at the selvedge.

Equipment Needed: A rigid heddle loom with a 10 inch weaving width or wider AND a 12 dent reed. (If you only have a 10 inch loom, you must have a 12 dent reed.)

OR

A rigid heddle loom with a 15 inch weaving width or wider and a 10 dent reed.

Also required: 2 shuttles, warp packing material (heavy paper or warping sticks), scissors, tapestry needle, and any other items you like to use when warping.

Materials Needed: 150 yards of dark yarn and 180 yards of light yarn. The color and weave effects show best when you use colors that are very different in value. For a 12 dent reed you need 8/4 carpet warp. For a 10 dent reed you need 3/2 cotton or a sport weight cotton knitting yarn such as Paton's Grace or Omega Sinfonia. You can buy your own or purchase yarn from the instructor:

• Blue and White or Cream Maysville Carpet warp available for $6

• Blue and ivory 3/2 cotton for $8

You must notify the instructor if purchasing from her so the proper amount for your warping needs can be prepared.

Loom Rental: If you need to rent a loom, please contact the instuctor in advance to make arrangements. Non-members can rent a loom, but it can only be used during class and not taken home to finish the project if not completed during class.

Questions? Email the instructor, Nancy Niemeyer, at measuredthreads@gmail.com. Problems registering? Contact the Education Chair at classes@weaversguildcincinnati.org.

Your registration fee will be refunded only if the class is canceled or changed to a different day. Three (3) registrants are needed for a class to be held.
