Event description

Description

The post-colonial state is often a strange place to be: European laws, languages, and practices overlaying local traditions and culture. The consequences of colonialism are also highly controversial: many argue it was pure, racist violence that destroyed entire civilisations; while others see the silver linings in technology, healthcare and modernity.

One of the clearest examples of this Janus-faced situation is Hong Kong — one of the most recently decolonized territories in the world, having remained under British rule through three waves of decolonisation after World War II. On one hand, Hong Kong was a haven from the worst ravages of Communist rule in China; on the other hand, Hong Kong remains today deeply unequal amidst struggles over its national identity.

On June 23, The Economist Club will be discussing these issues and more:
- What legacy did colonialism leave in Hong Kong and other colonies?
- Was colonialism good or bad for the colonised People’s?
- Is there still colonialism today?

Join upcoming meeting of The Economist Club in Hong Kong to discuss "Colonialism in Hong Kong and Beyond: Then and Now", which will be on Sat, June 23rd, 17:30-19:00 at Cafe 8 in Central.

The discussion will be based on the following articles:
