Event Details

Hey College Outside Clubs and Programs!

The Collegiate Outdoor Leadership Summit is here and registration is now open!

Remind me again…? COLS is College Outside’s flagship leadership weekend (previously College Get Outside Weekend), where you get the opportunity to spend the weekend with leaders from other outing clubs or outdoor education programs in your region. You'll leave this weekend with new leadership skills, new friends, and a thousand new ideas for how to improve and grow your college outdoor program. We've partnered with the Adirondack Mountain Club again this year for top-level trips and workshops, awesome food, and a jaw-dropping location! This weekend is designed to bring you closer to your fellow program leaders, while having the amazing opportunity to meet and learn from your peers at other schools.

Why should I be stoked? Because this is THE best way to kick off the school year! Here is just a teaser of the things you can look forward to:

  • Guided hiking and rock climbing trips
  • Hiking to mountain tops and plane crashes
  • Comprehensive leadership training
  • Trip planning and LNT clinics
  • Food, music, campfires, and games
  • Thousands of dollars worth of free swag and prizes (as always!!)
  • New friends and contacts at other college and universities

Tell me more about the trips:

When you purchase a ticket, you will also register for the trip that you would like to sign up for. These are on a first come, first serve basis, so the early bird gets the worm!

Here are the trips descriptions:

  • Guided Hike + Outdoor Leadership 101 (Trip A + B): Spend the day learning crucial outdoor leadership skills with a trained ADK Staff Member. This experiential course includes an introduction to leadership styles, managing group dynamics, decision making, trip planning and execution, and teaching methods. Whether new or experienced, this course can help you polish your leadership skills. All training will happen out of the trail, so prepare to be hiking a few miles.
  • Guided Hike - Hurricane Mountain: This 7 mile round trip hike with 2000' of evelvation gain has a firetower on the top with views of Lake Champlain and the High Peaks.  Along the way we’ll have discussions on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace and how you can protect your public lands while recreating outside.
Guided Hike - Phelps Mountain:  Ranked 32nd in height of the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondacks, Phelps Mountain offers hikers fantastic views of Mount Marcy and beyond. We will start at the Adirondak Loj and hike 8.8 miles round-trip, with an elevation gain of 1,982 feet up to the summit at 4,161 ft.  Along the way we’ll have discussions on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace and how you can protect your public lands while recreating outside.
  • Guided Hike - Mt. Colden: You'll enjoy fantastic views and climb a High Peak on this 12 mile round trip hike with 2,500' of elevation gain.  Along the way we’ll have discussions on Wilderness and the “Wildness” of our public lands.
  • Guided Climbing Trip (Intermediate and Beyond): Spend the day climbing with certified AMGA climbing guide Kel Rossiter (Owner of Adventure Spirit Guides). Learn all of the basic skills you'll need to climb outside on your own, set up top ropes, and maybe even mock lead! (Sponsored by the American Alpine Club!)
  • Trail Building & Repair 101: Spend the day improving trails with the ADK Volunteer Trail Crew for Fall Trails Day. Choose from a variety of projects.
  • Mt. Jo (Sunday Only): Join us for a strenuous, yet short hike to the summit of Mount Jo. The hike is 2.2- miles round-trip, with an elevation gain of 700 feet. Enjoy a naturalist-led interpretive walk up to the amazing views of the surrounding High Peaks Wilderness Area.
  • Option to do your own un-guided adventure! There are tons of water and land adventures to be had from the ADK loj!

Who can participate?

We are welcoming outing club and outdoor education program leaders. Due to the demand for this event, we will be limiting this to leaders or potential club leaders only. We recommend using this weekend as a leadership retreat, as we will be allocating time for you and your clubs to meet and plan for the school year!

How much does it cost?

The full ticket cost is $73, and includes camping and lean-to space, all meals Satuday, Sunday breakfast, a raffle tickets, and all trips, trainings, and speakers. Participants are expected to supply their own outdoors gear (hiking gear, bikes, camping supplies, etc) however there will be many tents, sleeping bags, and other equipement that you can borrow for the weekend (included with your ticket). Food will be provided for the entire day on Saturday and for breakfast Sunday. Make sure to eat before arriving Friday night and bring extra snacks!

Check in for the event opens on Friday night and will continue through Saturday morning around 8:30 am. The cost for the weekend remains the same, regardless if you plan on staying 1 or 2 nights. Transportation should be organized through your club/outdoor education program, and we will be coordinating a large scale carpool.

Make sure to join the Facebook Event for updates and pre-event communications!

Special thanks to our partners and sponsors!
