We would be delighted if you could join us for our College of Social Sciences - Citizens UK Annual Lecture 2018, part of a series of events promoting discussion of Universal Basic Income (UBI).

We welcome Professor Guy Standing to give our CoSS Citizens UK Annual Lecture on the theme of universal basic income, an area on which he is widely regarded as a world-leading expert.

Professor Standing is a Professorial Research Associate at School of Oriental and African Studies University of London and a founder member and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), a non-governmental organisation that promotes a basic income for all.

Universal Basic Income is positioned as a radical response to an age of deepening economic and social insecurity and for an accelerating technological revolution. Just a few years ago, an unconditional basic income was considered a pipe dream. Today, it is widely regarded as ‘an idea whose time has come’ with intense discussions taking place across political and scientific camps.

The College of Social Sciences is a Principal Partner in Citizens UK: Birmingham, a diverse civil society alliance bringing together over 25 member institutions, including education, community, trade union and faith-based organisations from across the city. Citizens UK: Birmingham is committed to using community organising to generate collective power for social change and convene a series of local campaigns on issues of social justice. The lecture will take place on Wednesday 6th June 2018 from 14.00 to 16.30 in G15 Muirhead Tower, and will be followed by a Q&A and networking session.

The lecture will be preceded by a film screening of ‘Free Lunch Society’, a film on Universal Basic Income on Wednesday 25 April 2018 in Gisbert Kapp NG16 14.00 to 16.00 to be followed by a Q&A with Citizens UK. The film provides background information about UBI and searches for explanations, possibilities and experiences regarding its implementation.

The lecture will be followed by a Citizens UK Civic Academy to be held 10.30 to 12.00 on Thursday 7 June2018 at Birmingham Progressive Synagogue, Birmingham, B15 1HD. The Academy provides an opportunity to continue the discussion on universal basic income with a view towards collective action.

All events are open to all colleagues and students in the College of Social Sciences and wider University together with members of Citizen UK institutions.
