Description

Collectively We Care – Collectively We Help” Forum – Elder Abuse in Ethno-Cultural Communities

On behalf of the Social Planning Council of Ottawa and the Ethno-Cultural Seniors of Ottawa we would
like to invite you to the Forum “Collectively We Care – Collectively We Help”. This Forum will focus on
delivering important messages and education on Elder Abuse in Ethno-Cultural Communities. The
Forum which will take place at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre, 102 Greenview Avenue on Wednesday,
October 16, 2019 from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm.

According to the 2016 Census there are approximately 79,710 immigrant seniors above the age of 55+
residing in Ottawa. The top ten countries of birth are China, United Kingdom, Lebanon, India,
Philippines, Haiti, Vietnam, Italy, Iran and Poland. The top 10 languages spoken are Arabic, Mandarin,
Spanish, Cantonese, Italian, Farsi, Somali, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Despite evidence that
Canada’s population is both aging and becoming increasingly multicultural, limited resources and
supports are available to support seniors from cultural backgrounds who experience abuse and neglect.
As is the case in the broader population, ethnocultural minority seniors face a range of challenges when
accessing services because of low income (61%), poor language skills (54%), and disabilities (21%).
The Social Planning Council of Ottawa is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of the ethno-
cultural seniors in Ottawa and is currently leading the development of educational awareness and
knowledge building tools on elder abuse. Specifically, ethno-cultural seniors identified the need for
ethno specific services to respond to elder abuse and increased public awareness of elder abuse.

This Forum will be a first step to start the dialogue with stakeholders and service providers to develop a
broader community response on prevention, education and response services that address elder abuse
in Ottawa’s ethno-cultural communities

This is a Free event. Refreshments will be served. Exhibitors that cater to the senior population will be onsite.
