Event description
In this lively two-day, mixed media workshop, we’ll create abstract collages using monotypes (one of a kind prints) printed on gel plates.

About this Event

In this lively and intensive two-day, mixed media workshop, we’ll create abstract collages using monotypes (one of a kind prints) printed on gel plates. The focus is on opening avenues for artistic expression, encouraging an imaginative, personal response and building confidence. You’ll be guided through all steps of the process with demonstrations, examples and one-on-one help. As an artist and educator with many years of experience, as well as a certified GOLDEN Artist Educator, I’ll offer lots of tips and techniques to help you make the most of your acrylic paints and art making process. Taking an art workshop is a great investment in your creative development. This is a great workshop for beginning and intermediate levels. There is a SUPPLY LIST, see below. Some supplies are included in the workshop fee, also listed below.

The workshop will start with printing on gel plates which is versatile, exciting and addicting! We’ll explore inventive ways to use stencils, stamps, masks, texture tools and painting with a brush, to create layered, unexpected combinations. Some prints may develop into stand-alone artworks, some will make great backgrounds and the rest will be used for collage. A lot of printing will be done with GOLDEN Open acrylics, a slow drying paint that is perfect for this process. Additionally, we’ll mix it up and use High Flow paint, Heavy Body acrylics, and acrylic mediums in various combinations with Pan Pastels and Caran D’Ache crayons for surprising results.

Next, participants will create several collages both planned and spontaneous, on paper and small cradled panels or canvas. To start your ideas flowing, a fun, quick paced collage improvisation activity will serve as a warm up. An array of design strategy examples and finished artwork will be provided for inspiration. Working on a group of projects at the same time will help you open up and loosen your process as well as keep you in the creative zone. Both the collages and the prints will be created with a wide variety of papers including gorgeous handmade papers, printing paper, copy paper and lots more.

Depending on your experience level and your work habits you may finish your pieces during the workshop. Or, you may have several good starts that will be works in process to take home to complete. Participants can email me for up to 2 weeks after the workshop for guidance or questions about their in process work.

Supplies included in the workshop fee:

1) Paint and Mediums- GOLDEN Heavy Body, High Flow, OPEN Iridescent acrylics, GAC 100, Matte Medium, Liquitex Iridescent Medium

2) All paper

3) Caran D’Ache Crayons and other drawing media
