Event description
Celebrating & critically reflecting upon the successes & challenges of academic- community collaborations

About this Event

Are you a faculty member, student, community organizer, researcher, artist, activist, institutional partner or cultural leader ready to engage in some intimate and challenging discussions around how higher education can make the world a better place? Join us in celebrating and critically reflecting upon 100 years of Scholar Activism at The New School, along with Imagining America, and peers across universities, communities and disciplines.

A century ago, daring professors in New York City walked out on an imperfect model of higher education, inspiring today’s New School community of scholars, creators, and activists to make their mark on the world. With growing socio-economic inequality, dispossession, racism, threats to freedom of expression and civil rights protections for marginalized communities, the current political moment reminds us of the critical importance of building coalitions across disciplines to ground scholarship and learning in the lived experience and expertise of communities. Grassroots groups, cultural organizers, movement leaders and activists have historically been at the frontlines in response to global issues, and led the production and sharing of knowledge that is fundamental to the creation of a more just and sustainable world. What are examples of non-extractive and interdisciplinary practices that leverage this expertise, and address pressing issues of equity, access, accountability and impact? What is the role and relevance of academic-community partnerships at this turning point, and what does the future require from us as scholar activists, community organizers and institutions of higher education?
