Event description
Two-Day Advanced Training in Collaborative & Proactive Solutions with Dr. Ross Greene

About this Event

Collaborative & Proactive Solutions: Advanced Training with Dr. Ross Greene

This two-day advanced training provides in-depth exposure to the evidence-based model described by Dr. Ross Greene in his influential books The Explosive Child, Lost and School, Lost and Found, and Raising Human Beings. Dr. Greene will instruct educators and mental health clinicians on how to engage kids in solving the problems that affect their lives.

The CPS model is based on the premise that challenging behavior occurs when the expectations being placed on a kid exceed his or her capacity to respond adaptively. Rather than focusing on challenging behaviors (and modifying them), the model places emphasis on identifying the expectations the kid is having difficulty meeting -(called unsolved problems) and solving them.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to use and practice using the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP).
  • Learn the ins and outs of solving problems collaboratively (Plan B) rather than unilaterally (Plan A).
  • Learn the nuances of each of the three steps of Plan B, including: (in the Empathy step) drilling strategies, gathering information from reluctant participants, and working with nonverbal kids and those with very limited communication skills; (in the Define Adult Concerns step) how to articulate adult concerns; and (in the Invitation step) the various potential pitfalls in generating solutions that are realistic and mutually satisfactory.
  • Discuss and consider strategies for dealing with the various structural factors in schools that may impede implementation of the CPS model
  • Discuss and consider strategies for dealing with "interfering factors" impeding implementation in families

Lecture, video demonstration, and role-play will be used as the primary means of instruction.

Participants in this two-day training will leave with an understanding of the underpinnings of the model, its refinements over the past 8-10 years, and practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in diverse settings.

Intended Audience: special educators, classroom teachers, special education administrators, superintendents, principals/assistant principals, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, pediatricians/family physicians, staff in restrictive therapeutic facilities (inpatient psychiatry units, residential facilities, juvenile detention facilities)
