A radically different approach to curriculum development.

The Problem.

The "MakerSpace" Collaborative Curriculum Workshop is unique in the series as it has two aspects – the traditional curriclum aspect we address in these workshops, and the additional problem of designing and building the physical makerspace.

Problem Part 1:

Thematic, integrated, universal, experiential, project-based and problem-based.  We believe that curriculum developed with these principles is significantly more powerful for student engagement, achievement, motivation and a host of other factors.  Unfortunately, it is also much more complex, time-consuming and intimidating for teachers to develop these types of curriculum alone when they are used to following scripted single-subect lecture-based curriculum structures.  We believe that if there were well designed and teacher-tested examples of thematic, integrated, universal, experiential and PBL(x2) curriculum available more teachers and schools would utilize it.

Problem Part 2:

We believe students should have regular access to a space where they can play, experiment, prototype, iterate . . . but most importantly MAKE stuff.  We have a great space here locally – FamiLab, but it isn’t super kid friendly.  Kids need a space that feels their own, where they can move around freely and parents can rest assured their children will be safe.

The Project.

So that's what we are going to do.

In 2 parallel groups, we will both be developing a way to integrate making into the curriculum, and designing a youth-friendly makerspace.

1.     We will develop a thematic, integrated, universal, experiential and PBL(x2) curriculum for K-12 students that we will utilize at our school during the 2013-2014 school year, refine and iterate as we implement and then publish with implementation notes at the end of the school year.

2.    We will develop a plan and start implementing the necessary steps to build our makerspace.  This may include writing grant appplications, approaching sponsors, gathering materials and even the beginings of physically setting up the space.

The Theme.

The theme we will be working on this workshop is Making in Schools.  Sweet, right?

The Experience.

Join us for a day full of activities, examples, projects and planning that will lead to the generation of what will be an amazing curriculum unit, and a cool new community space.  We will meet on Friday night for dinner and drinks (6-8pm, location TBD) to meet the people we’ll be working with on this project (We’ve recently added this piece as it was requested by past participants), and then spend the day Saturday doing.

The Team.

Anyone interested in being a part of this design process - People in the education world, in the business/startup world, in the design world, familab members, people who make in their garages, people who want to make but have no idea where to start, people in related or seemingly unrelated industries, parents, students, in short - anyone.  It's vital that we have a cross-disciplinary group of folks to get the most innovative curriculum design ideas so don't feel like you have to have classroom or curriculum design experience to join us!

A radically different approach to school model development.

[ ]schools is an organization that designs and runs events that fundamentally change the way we approach school model development.

Our Collaborative Curriculum Development Workshops Series is designed to bring together an interdisciplinary group of people to design the most interesting and authentic curriculum modules for our students.

We are also launching [ ]schools weeks this summer - week long events for individuals interested in launching a new school model. This radically different approach to school model development takes best practices from a wide range of industries, like design (design thinking processes) & entrepreneurship (lean startup methodologies) and through an intensive 7-day process, harnesses the power of an interdisciplinary group of folks from around the country to take a new school leader’s vision from thought to reality, questioning all assumptions about schools, refusing to have arbitrary constraints put on solutions, and opting for an alternative to an incremental, “sucks less” approach to school reform.
