Cole's Bar Mitzvah Project: Basketball Tournament
Hi – I am Cole Friedlander a 7th grader at Pyle Middle School living in Bethesda, MD. I am super excited to be having my Bar Mitzvah in Israel in June 2017. I traveled to Israel for the first time when my older sister and my cousin had a Bnai Mitzvah in June 2014. The experience was so incredible and special that I knew that I wanted to return and do the same when it was my turn. I can’t believe my turn is almost here!
For my Bar Mitzvah project, I wanted to choose something that would support Israel but that was also meaningful to me. After much thought, I chose to support the Friends of the Israeli Defense Force in its efforts to support the thousands of young men and women of the IDF who risk their lives each and every day to ensure the safety of Israel and the Israeli people. I also wanted to choose a project that I could personally connect to; since I love sports and hanging out with my friends, I chose to raise money to provide an active/leisure space at one of the IDF bases in the Northern part of Israel.
Young soldiers in the Kfir brigade come from around the country—and even from around the world—to undergo tireless training to defend the Jewish homeland. Their bases become the places where they can bond with their comrades, celebrate birthdays, relax and reflect. An outdoor leisure corner will provide soldiers with a space where they can unwind from their tough days of training. Soldiers can use them to socialize, read, share a meal or just hang out. It will greatly enhance their morale and team spirit.
