Description

Cold Songs | Warm Songs: A New Winter Tradition

How does one reconcile a desire for a familiar holiday ritual, rooted in beauty, inspiration, and joy, and the longing for a more inclusive, multicultural, and secular experience?

Many fans of concert music rave about the Lessons and Carols tradition from the Anglican church, a beautiful ritual of candlelight, songs, readings, and communal singing. For this holiday season, Big Mouth Society is offering a multilingual and cross-cultural version of this beautiful tradition. There will be inspirational readings (in many tongues) about love, nature, compassion, and the environment, interspersed with beautiful music from around the world, familiar music for all to sing aloud, and the chance to meditate and renew our spirits by candlelight.

The audience will be treated to a Rukai (Aboriginal Taiwanese) folk song, a Brazilian folk song, an African-American spiritual, Civil War-era music, new music from local and international composers, and historical music by unconventional geniuses. Three pieces will be Pacific Northwest premieres. Our incredibly diverse group of musicians will share their favorite poetry and prose in Chinese, Portuguese, Danish, Turkish, Spanish and English.

With thrilling music, reflective words, and thoughtful visual accompaniment, Big Mouth musicians promise to take the audience on an unforgettable journey of beauty and peace.
