Event description
Nate and Katie have graciously agreed to host an old fashioned lobster bake at their home following an afternoon exploring scenic Newport.

About this event

Calling IE Brownies of Cohort 11: You are cordially invited to a day of Rhode Island festivities, including an outing to historic Newport by ferry, and culminating in a classic New England lobster bake at the home of Nate and Katie in Richmond. Join for half or the full day, which includes ferry transport from Providence to Newport, and bus transport to and from Nate's house. The lobster bake will begin at 5:30 pm, dinner around 6:30, and end at 9 with a bus back to Providence (arr. 10 pm).

Find an itinerary below.

Notes:

  • Please purchase ferry tickets as soon as possible. Choose one-way from Providence to Newport ($11), 12:45 pm departure on June 20. There is also a 9 am departure option for those wanting more time in Newport. The ferry schedule has limited departures, and 12:45 was the only time that worked for our group's agenda.

Ticket pricing includes: Lobster dinner and appetizers, Alcohol (there's an option for tickets without alc for non drinkers), Tent, event rentals (tables, chairs, etc), Bus rental, Labor (catering, tent delivery & set up, vendors)

We tried to cut costs wherever possible and appreciate your understanding.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ):

How do I get my ferry ticket?

1. Go to https://seastreak.com/ferry-routes-and-schedules/between-providence-newport-ri/

2. Click "Buy Tickets"

3. Departure: Providence; Arriving: Newport; One-way

4. Select date and 12:45 pm departure.

What does my event ticket cover?

For the full day option with alcohol, your ticket covers bus transport to and from Nate's, the full lobster bake meal with alcohol (beer/wine), and rentals for the event including the tent, tables, chairs, and labor costs for the vendors. We felt it was important to rent a tent in the event of rain or extreme heat.

Note that ferry tickets and events in Newport are not covered in the ticket price.

What is the difference in ticket price?

We are aware that some folks don't drink and did not want to charge unfairly. For the half vs. full day option, the only difference in price is the bus fee (about $23 pp for round trip to and from Nate's - this was a much better deal than individual Ubers). Remember that you are responsible for purchasing your own ferry ticket.

What is there to do in Newport?

Here are some local tips. For our brief time there, we recommend exploring Thames Street, checking out the Cliff Walk (walking distance from Thames St), or grabbing a cocktail atop the stunning Castle Hill.

Downtown Newport is beautiful and historic, and it's fun to simply wander the cobblestone streets full of shops, and get lost among the scenic neighborhoods and ocean vistas.

Do I have to take the ferry if I want to explore Newport?

No. You're welcome to join the group any time in Newport (about 40 min drive from Providence), but please note that bus seats are limited to 44 people max. If you want to get the bus to Nate's from Newport, please note that seating is not guaranteed unless you signed up for the full day. If you miss the bus from Newport to Nate's, you will need to take a cab or an Uber.

What is a lobster bake and what will be served?

A lobster bake is a classic New England way of preparing lobster and seafood over a fire piled with coals and seaweed. The tradition, administered by a family-owned company specializing in bakes, involves an opening presentation and is a sight to see for lobster bake virgins. We opted for this option to give you the most authentic experience possible, even if you don't like seafood!

The menu will include a variety of seafood and seafood alternatives, including spicy chorizo and bbq chicken. In addition to lobster, there will be steamed clams and mussels. For sides, we will offer corn on the cob and red bliss potatoes. There will be veggie crudite for appetizers. If you're concerned about the menu or dietary conflicts, contact Liza.

What alcohol is being served?

To mitigate cost, we are serving beer, wine and rose only. You're welcome to bring an alternative option on your own. For non alcoholic beverages, we will serve seltzer, still water, and perhaps some soft drink options - let us know what you like.

Can I ride the bus back even if I didn't sign up for the full day?

Space on the bus is limited to 44 seats, so we'll have to see how sign ups go closer to the date. Some of us (like Liza) will be driving a car to and from the event for set up and breakdown, so you may be able to catch a ride. If you think you're going to want a ride back on the bus, you're better off signing up for the whole day to reserve your seat on the bus.

What if I miss the bus back to Providence?

We have class early on Monday, so plan accordingly! If for some reason you miss the bus (departing at 9), you will have to Uber or cab it back to Providence, a 40 minute ride. Or maybe Nate will let you crash on his couch.
