A Coffee Chat on the Economic Challenges of the Euro Area and the Work of the ECB

A lecture by:

Mr. Pierre Wunsch

Governor, National Bank of Belgium

As the euro enters its third decade, Governor Pierre Wunsch (National Bank of Belgium) will share his views on the lessons learned during this historic monetary experiment. He will make three points to kick off the floor discussion. First, most US economists were wrong about the euro: it is a success, albeit a qualified one. It mostly delivered the goods and survived a potentially lethal crisis, but there was political overreach as to what the euro could achieve, notably in terms of convergence or political integration. Second, the 2008 crisis exposed well-known gaps. The good news is that we know how to plug them if political will exists. Third, the ECB has grown more agile after the crisis. However, it cannot do the heavy lifting alone and reforms are needed. Among the (too) many reform proposals, some (e.g. effective fiscal rules) deserve more attention than others (e.g. a central budget).

Guillaume Pierre Wunsch is Governor at the National Bank of Belgium, member of the ECB’s Governing and General Council, member of the European Systemic Risk Board, member of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements, IMF Governor, Chairman of the Resolution College, member of the High Council for Finance, member of the Board of Directors of the National Accounts Institute. He was Director of the Strategic Finance Cell at the Ministry of Finance during the financial crisis of 2008. He holds a PhD in Economics (UCL) and a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs (Princeton).

This event is supported by the Michael C. Olshausen Lecture Fund.

BMW Center for German and European Studies

The BMW Center for German and European Studies (CGES) was established in 1990 as one of three North American "Centers of Excellence," each supported by a ten-year grant from the German government and administered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). At the end of the decade, BMW AG's $10 million endowment gift secured the Center's fundamental mission into the 21st century: to educate future generations of transatlantic leaders. CGES is also home to the Master of Arts in German and European Studies (MAGES) program. The BMW Center is located in Georgetown's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.
