"Coded Bias" Screening & Community Conversation
Event Information
About this Event
Join the Meaningful Movies Project for a screening and community discussion of the documentary "Coded Bias."
Please join us for a screening of the film on OVEE on March 25th, which will be followed by a community conversation on Zoom about the challenges of technology, facial recognition, surveillance and what we need to do to preserve and protect our fundamental rights.
Film Description: When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies fail more often on darker-skinned faces or the faces of women than others, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in artificial intelligence (AI). As it turns out, algorithms, data, and computers are not neutral. From facial scanning used for policing and surveillance to automated HR systems that mirror and magnify workplace prejudices, these technologies are created with fundamentally biased building blocks. Emboldened by these troubling discoveries, Buolamwini goes on to start the Algorithmic Justice League and joins a group of pioneering women to shed a light on the underlying biases in the technology that shapes our lives and threatens our democracy.
Special Guest: Jennifer Lee, Technology & Liberty Manager at the ACLU of Washington, where she advocates for state and local legislation to regulate powerful surveillance and AI-based technologies. She leads ACLU-WA’s work pushing for and implementing community-focused policies related to technology, privacy, and civil liberties. A key focus of her work is organizing a tech coalition that centers race equity and the voices of historically marginalized communities. She is working with researchers, activists, and technologists to develop community capacity-building counter-surveillance and AI policy toolkits.
Schedule for March 25:

7:30PM - Community conversation on Zoom with opportunities for small group discussion.
Special Guest: ACLU Washington 'Technology and Liberty' Project Manager
