HOW DID SECRET TEAMS OF CODE-BREAKING WOMEN HELP WIN THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC?

ASK AN EXPERT

The Cold War Museum, in cooperation with Old Bust Head Brewing Company, invites you to attend a presentation by former Washington Post reporter Liza Mundy on

Code Girls:

The Untold Story of American Women Code Breakers of World War II

Liza Mundy, a former Washington Post reporter and author of the recently released book Code Girls, will present the previously untold story of the talented young women from around the country who were recruited for the top secret task of forming teams to decrypt large numbers of messages in the major Japanese military and diplomatic codes. Under extreme pressure to read the messages in time to help protect our ships and submarines and sink the enemy’s, they performed so well at their headquarters at Arlington Hall in Arlington, VA that they were an important element in the reversal of Japanese military fortunes and the successful outcome of the war in the Pacific.

Using recently declassified archives at the National Security Agency and interviews with surviving Code Girls, Mundy brings alive the extremely varied backgrounds and personalities of many individual Code Girls and takes you into the day-to-day tensions and successes of their top secret work. And Vint Hill was one of the two most important intercept stations for the messages decrypted by the Code Girls. • July 22nd: Technology…The Key to NSA Success. John O’Hara, the former Chief Scientist for the National Security Agency, will discuss and give examples of the tremendous areas of NSA research and some of the results of NSA research and development. Where possible he will give some of the applications of the developments. He will also discuss the position of Chief Scientist at NSA, as much as security concerns permit. The four main areas of NSA research, according to the NSA website at https://www.nsa.gov/what-we-do/research/ , are:
    • We develop the means to dominate the global computing and communications network.
    • We cope with the overload of information in our environment and turn that overload to our strategic advantage.
    • We provide the means for ubiquitous, secure collaboration both within our government and through its interactions with various partners.
    • We create the means for penetrating into the "hard" targets that threaten our nation wherever, whenever, or whomever they may be.

  • We expect to schedule two additional presentations for the Fall.
