Description

The problem: Hundreds of cultural sites cherished around the world are unprepared for a range of disasters from fire to flood, climate change to conflict. At the same time, many of the world’s latest innovations and technologies have not been applied to some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. In the shadow of the recent Notre Dame tragedy, we are calling on talented developers, designers, and entrepreneurs to contribute ideas and solutions in this special one day hackathon.

As part of this initiative, we will work in partnership with local organizations to mobilize developers and data scientists to participate in a global hackathon to create IT-driven solutions to aid in the resilience, recovery and rebuilding of iconic buildings like the Cathedral. We hope you will join us in pioneering the impact technology space.

Code and Response: How will your code change the world? To facilitate the development and launch of innovative, life-changing open technology, IBM has created Code and Response.

This $25 million, four year initiative will build, fortify, test, and launch open technology solutions that help communities needing critical aid. Our focus for 2019 is Disaster Preparation and Recovery, with an emphasis on health and wellness.

As a launching point for open source programs like Call for Code and Clinton Global Initiative University, Code and Response will support the entire process of creating solutions for those most in need.

CHALLENGES & PRIZES

Attendees at the Code for Notre Dame Hackathon will be asked to build a project that addresses the following challenge:

Create an application that improves disaster preparedness, accelerated response, and/or a greater capacity to recover. Reduce the vulnerability of cultural heritage sites, forecast impending threats, improve precautionary measures, increase the response efficiency and enhance the resilience of some of humanity’s greatest treasures. We call on developers to create practical, effective, and high-quality applications based on IBM cloud, data, and artificial intelligence that can have both an immediate and lasting impact.

JUDGING

Each submission will be scored in each round based on the following criteria with a minimum score of 0 and a maximum score of 25 points, with the final score being the average of the judges’ scores:

  • Fundability: How fundable is this idea? Is there potential for a sustainable business model? Is this scalable? (0-5 points)

  • Execution: How well was the project executed and explained? Did they add a demo video? (0-5 points)

  • UI/UX: Beyond design, was the end-to-end user experience for the solution considered? (0-5 points)

  • Originality: How original, creative or unique is the idea? Is there a competitive advantage? (0-5 points)

  • Team: Is there a diverse team presented? Do they have a range of complementary skill sets for the project? (0-5 points)
