The Active Citizen is partnering with Repair the World to bring you a very special event on restorative justice. Restorative justice is a groundbreaking approach to school discipline that seeks not to punish or isolate, but to resolve and mediate. Given that minority students are disproportionately suspended and expelled, there is a real relationship between school discipline and academic and social success. Suspended students are less likely to graduate, more likely to fall behind, and even more likely to be imprisoned when they are adults. Therefore, restorative justice is not just a school issue, but a social justice issue.
This event is part of Repair the World’s cocktails with a conscience series. As such, we will have drinks and snacks and the opportunity to mingle at the start of the event. Then we will further explain the concept of restorative justice and have a community speaker share stories of the effects of this practice. We will have time for small group discussion and reflection at the end.
