Event description

Wild food, coastal foraging and bushcraft cooking day in Moidart, near Fort William

Spend the day exploring the beautiful wild environment of the Atlantic Oak woodlands and shoreline of Moidart, with the guidance of instructor Leon Durbin from Wildwood Bushcraft.

You will forage for a range of edible shellfish, seaweed, coastal and woodland plants, gaining practical know-how about where to find different species, safe foraging and legal issues. You will then light a fire and cook a foraged lunch on the beach. Come prepared for a day spent outdoors, with hiking boots or wellies, waterproofs, water bottle etc. We are a Leave No Trace trainer. Pick up and drop off at Lochailort station possible by arrangement.

Course content: foraging, preparation of food, campfire cooking and eating!

collecting razor clams
Our woodlands and seashores contain a wealth of food if we know when and where to look. There are also hazards to avoid such as poisonous plants. This course will teach you to identify seasonal wild foods and provide you with the opportunity to cook and eat them on an open fire.

The course provides plenty of hands-on practical know-how about foraging in the wild!

Client quotes from similar courses:

"Thank you very much for the great day foraging yesterday with a nice bunch of people. I learned a lot from Leon, he has a lot of survival knowledge and he let us get on with things, like the fishing and catching razorfish. I am definitely going to do more of shellfish and seaweed foraging around my own area. Thank you for the inspiration. It is great to get out and look for food and then preparing and eating it all. Thanks to the course I know now what to look out for and got more confidence what and where to pick." - M. Klever

"I absolutely loved the day. I'm glad I got to gut the fish. It was something I needed to do and I'm glad it wasn't a rabbit as I'm not quite ready for that yet... I really enjoyed the whole day and it was a good group to work with." - D. Harbor

"I liked the hands on approach to the course, the tutor explained everything in detail but took a step back at each stage of the course so that we could try things out for ourselves. I have come away with confidence to start to try things myself and continue my enjoyment of bushcraft and nature." - J. Cashman
