Description: How can we interrupt inequities in schools? How can we help educators become aware of and shift the beliefs they hold that might not serve children? This workshop explores coaching strategies that interrupt the practices that uphold systemic oppression. We build knowledge around foundational concepts including equity, unconscious bias, microaggressions, cultural competence, and internalized oppression. We explore the coach’s socio-political consciousness and then consider how to foster someone else’s socio-political consciousness with compassion and curiosity. We consider how to effectively use data and attend to emotional intelligence in what can be difficult conversations.

Outcomes

  • Recognize when a client is holding beliefs that need to be explored and make decisions about how and when to do so
  • Persistently unpack beliefs using a range of coaching strategies
  • Identify high leverage entry points to interrupt inequities
  • Foster increased awareness about how historical systems of oppression manifest in schools, classrooms and educators’ behaviors
  • Use a variety of strategies to respond to one's own emotions and those of others in coaching for equity
