Co-Parenting: Communicating for Results (C4R)

10-Week Course

Starting Wednesday, October 4, 2017

Ending Wednesday, December 13, 2017

No class Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Separation and divorce often occur because of a lack of adequate communication skills. C4R is a 10-week, hands-on, experiential course for parents who want to learn how to communicate more effectively with their former partners. The business world has invested a great deal of time and effort training staff to improve their comnunication with co-workers and clients. Dr. Kate Regan, an Organizational Psychologist, developed a course for improving communication in the workplace. Dr. Tuchman and Dr. Regan have adapted this model to focus on parents who are engaging in a difficult post-separation/divorce relationship with their former partners.

Separating parents who have participated in Communicating for Results have commented that it saved their divorce, improved their marriage, and one wistful parent believed it could have saved her marriage had she and her husband taken the course before their communications had so badly deteriorated.

We will discuss these communication skills in the context of experiences that co-parents have on a regular basis. You will learn how to:

  • recognize how your history and old patterns impact your communication style

  • explore your current patterns of communication

  • respond more effectively in highly emotional conversations

  • challenge and change your stories about the other parent

  • manage your ego instead of blaming the other parent

  • understand how poeple use and abuse power and authority in a relationship

  • listen as an act of being present

  • become curious when you believe you already know the answer

  • deepen your understanding of your emotional responses

  • change your patterns of interaction when those patterns have a long and seemingly predictable history

  • keep your children out of the middle of your divorce so they do not feel they have lost their family

  • negotiate agreements that are child-focused

  • have effective, planned, co-parenting conversations

  • retain the recognition of yourself as a loving human being in a post-divorce family

It is not necessary for both parents to attend the course together. We have come to understand that when one person changes how they engage in a relationship, it, by definition, changes the communication between them. If both parents attend, whether it is at the same time or not, the ability to alter their interactions has the possibility of changing more quickly.

At the conclusion of the 10 week course, you will be provided with a Certificate you can bring to court, indicating you have successfully completed the course. All classes must be attended in order to receive the certificate.

At this time, the class is limited to 8 participants.
