Description

BACKGROUND

Victoria Walks and VicHealth are developing a behaviour change pilot program called 'Change 2 Walking', to encourage people to walk more for everyday short transport trips. This program is trialling the use of 'nudges' - relatively subtle cues that encourage people to make decisions that are in their broad self-interest. Nudges make it easier for people to make certain decisions, like walking. Nudge theory was developed by Richard Thaler, who won this years Nobel economics prize for his contributions to behavioural economics.

THE PROJECT

The program will be implemented in two types of setting - primary schools and train stations. Two primary schools and three train stations in Victoria have already been selected for the project. These locations have been chosen because they have large populations living within short walking distances, and the provision of walking infrastructure and facilities is good. Therefore, the opportunity to walk is relatively high but for various reasons people are not walking as often as they could. The aim is to intervene in subtle ways, through 'nudges', to encourage more school children to walk to and from school, and more train passengers to walk to and from the station. A nudge can take many forms, such as a letter, a sign, visual communications, prompts, gamification, role models etc

THE WORKSHOP

We are running a co-design workshop, to design nudges for the program. The workshop will run for approximately 4 hours, including breaks, on Saturday the 25th November and will be fully catered. The workshop will be facilitated by a team that includes service designers and behaviour change practitioners.

A design brief will be provided to all participants in advance, setting out the key actors, the context, the nudges to be trialled, key design parameters and budgets.

The workshop will take the form of a generative ideation design process:

  • First, participants will be fully briefed on the selected sites;

  • Second, working in groups, participants will create journey maps for the setting;

  • Third, participants will then generate ideas for how to deliver the nudges within the given constraints;

  • Fourth, participants will prioritise the ideas generated; and

  • Finally, we will gather feedback on the outcomes.

PARTICIPATION IN THE WORKSHOPS

Participation is voluntary, but all participants will be credited in the final publication for the program which will be made publically available.

We are looking for students and practitioners with backgrounds in Service Design, UX Design, Human-Centred Design, Visual Communications, Strategic Design and Digital Design, who understand this process and are able to think creatively, within constraints, systemically.
