Description

Co-Creating Well-Being: Supporting Families Through Trauma

This project is a multi-year, three phase initiative by the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York (HFWCNY) to see what is possible when we create solutons with children and families impacted by toxic stress and trama, rather than for them.

Phase 1 – Capacity Building

The first one-day training in human-centered design will introduce providers to new and effective ways to engage with community and to “design with and not for” intended consumers. The two training opportunities are intended for community agencies and service providers serving young children five and under and their families in western and central New York. A second one-day training will be a skill development session to increase the knowledge, number and range of providers informed on trauma, toxic stress, adverse childhood experiences, trauma-informed care, and early childhood development.

All training costs will be covered and are FREE to participants.

Children, Families and Trauma: What we need to know to support healing and resilience.

Date: Friday, March 8, 2019
Time: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
Location: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Syracuse, 6301 State Route 298, East Syracuse, NY 13057

Hot breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.

This full day training will provide an opportunity for local agencies to collaborate and build knowledge to better support children and families who are living with the experiences and effects of trauma. We will explore the meaning and impact of trauma, toxic stress, and adversity on human development, particularly related to the perinatal period and early childhood development. Collectively, we will investigate the confluence of social determinants of health (circumstances of poverty, housing, education systems, etc.) and trauma, toxic stress, and adversity for children and families, and examine theoretical models that help to explain intergenerational cycles of vulnerability. Together we will apply principles of trauma-informed care and co-create strategies for supporting resilience in children, families, our agencies, communities, and within ourselves.

This training will:

  • Provide an overview of the multiplicity of definitions of trauma, toxic stress, and adversity
  • Describe the effects of trauma, toxic stress, and adversity
  • Examine the effects of trauma/toxic stress/adversity on human development
  • Explore the influence of social determinants of health during the perinatal period and early childhood
  • Articulate theoretical models of intergenerational cycles of vulnerability
  • Engage providers in understanding and applying principles of trauma-informed care in their professional and personal lives
  • Explore the ways in which we can support resilience and buffer the effects of trauma in self, clients, and agencies

Staff Eligibility: Up to three (3) staff members from participating organizations may attend this training. We suggest that you think about attendance and participation from a team approach. Please contact Monica Brown at mbrown@hfwcny.org if you have any questions regarding eligibility.
