Description

What will be covered:

This class will teach the basic principles of CNC routing. Starting from a 3D model, students will learn how to turn that into a tool path (a plan for carving), how to set up the X-Carve CNC, and how to set the machine in motion.

We’ll also cover how CNCing is different from and similar to 3D printing.

Also covered will be software recommendations and additional materials students will want to acquire based on the types of things they want to create.

If you would like to come in and *use* the wood shop outside of this class, you must be a member.

Not yet a member? Sign up for membership here:
http://makenashville.org/become-a-member/

A paid membership doesn't automatically guarantee you'll just get to come and use all our tools. First and foremost, we need to make sure you can demonstrate that you know how to safely use them. We don't want you to injur yourself or anyone else, and also proper training helps prevent damage to our tools.

Not all classes are free for members, but they are always at least discounted. Why is this? Our instructors are experts; some choose to volunteer their time, and some need to earn money for sharing their knowledge and experience because this is how they make their living.

Please Bring:

  1. Dust mask, hearing protection, safety glasses if you have them. Make Nashville has a limited supply of disposable ones.

  2. Optional: ⅛ or ¼ inch shank end mills.

  3. Optional: A laptop loaded with the 3D modeling software of your choice (Autodesk 360 and Sketchup are good options)

About the instructor:

Maverick Edwards is Make Nashville’s Resident Woodworking Ninja.

He was one of those kids who asked for two of the same toy for Christmas; one to play with, and one to take apart to see how it worked. That request of course was never met, however the request for “more Lego and model rockets” (the gateway drugs to making) often was. By the time high school rolled around he had built nearly eighty model rockets and had taken up playing guitar. When one of his friends gave him a no name electric guitar that “didn’t work” it wasn’t long before it had been disassembled, refinished, rewired and turned into a playable instrument.

As he began playing in more bands and taking on ever more challenging instrument customization jobs, it inevitably lead to building guitars of his own design from scratch.

These days Maverick keeps the wolf from the door by being a computer programmer during the day. At night he can being found playing music with his band, or building yet another guitar in the Wood Shop.
