Completed in 2017, the $230M Sellwood Bridge Replacement project is the largest construction project that Multnomah County has ever attempted. This presentation will discuss why the project was needed, how the bridge type and delivery method were selected, what were the key challenges during design and construction, and what are the lessons learned.

Jon Henrichsen is the Bridge Services Manager for Multnomah County. The County's Bridge Service Section is responsible for the operation, preservation, and maintenance of 6 large bridges across the Willamette River in Portland, including four movable bridges (Hawthorne, Burnside, Morrison, and Broadway) and two fixed bridges (Sauvie Island and Sellwood).

Jon has been with the County for over 25 years, during which time he has been an inspector, electrical control systems designer, and project manager for many bridge rehabilitation projects. Most recently he has served as the Construction Manager for both the Sellwood Bridge and Sauvie Island Bridge Replacement projects. Jon received a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portland State University. He holds a PE license in both electrical and mechanical engineering.

Our Faubion, Our Future - The 3 to PhD™ Initiative with Concordia University

Construction moves steadily toward completion. Starting with a clean slate in the winter of 2016 the new Faubion PK-8 has risen steadily out of the ground over the last several months. Concrete foundations, masonry block walls, structural steel and roofs have framed the various sections of the building that will house the gym, classrooms and community services facilities of the rebuilt school. Throughout the rest of the fall and into the next year of the building will take shape as we head toward completion of the project in the summer of 2017.

PPS/Concordia University partnership: a new model for education

The new Faubion PK- 8/Concordia University building with its 3 to PhD® initiative will be the heartbeat of the neighborhood, offering wrap-around services to the Faubion community and Concordia students. The new building will combine Faubion School, the Concordia University College of Education, an early childhood education center, a health and wellness center, state of the art STEAM/ Maker Space facilities, a food club with organic and nutritious products and other services for the school community.

As the Senior Director of the Office of School Modernization at Portland Public Schools, Dan Jung is responsible for all design and construction of the bond funded capital improvement program. Dan studied architecture and land use planning and Portland State University before working in the construction and land use planning fields. Dan has been with PPS since 2010

Darren Lee has been working with HEERY International since May of 2014 and is currently acting as the Senior Construction Manager on the Portland Public Schools new Faubion Elementary School, schedule for completion in the summer of 2017. The Faubion project is one of the new buildings associated with the District’s $480-million-dollar Capital Construction Bond passed in 2012.
