Clues to Community Survival is a webinar that represents the Heartland Center’s synthesis of more than 25 years of case study research on what’s behind success in thriving small towns and rural communities. These 20 characteristics of successful communities all represent controllable contingencies, such as “Evidence of Community Pride,” underscoring that what local leaders say and do constitute the most important elements in community vitality. These 20 Clues are a strong counterpoint to conventional mythology, which too often assumes that variables such as size or location are the most critical aspects of community success. Now communities of any size, any place can gain the confidence to understand that if they build creative strategies around unique local assets, success can follow.

The presenter is Milan Wall, founder and co-director of the Heartland Center for Leadership Development and co-originator of the groundbreaking research that underscores the wisdom behind the 20 Clues to Rural Community Survival. Milan is a widely recognized leader in community and economic development across the United States and Canada. He is the co-author of a dozen publications and is a common keynoter at national and international conferences. Milan was a research project administrator at the University of Nebraska before he helped found the Heartland Center.
