Cloverleaf DPA - Trip to Rock Eagle - Have a pizza and dance party with your friends! Stay overnight! Present on your favorite topic!

About this Event

Trip to Rock Eagle - Cloverleaf District Project Achievement (DPA) - November 1-2, 2019 - Have a pizza and dance party with your friends! Stay overnight in a cabin! Present on your favorite topic! Only $35! In-school club officers only $25!

What? Come participate with Columbia County 4-H in a public speaking competition called District Project Achievement (DPA). This hands-on learning activity teaches youth how to research, develop, and present a 5-minute “show and tell” using posters and props on a topic that interests them. These skills help prepare students for the Georgia standardized writing test and gives them practice feeling comfortable speaking and presenting in front of others. At the event, 4-H’ers will compete with other counties in their project area. There is a project area for everyone! We encourage students to pick something he or she is passionate about. It is must easier to talk about something you love. Once they have chosen a project area, the student will write a short speech on a specific topic in that area and create five posters as visuals during the speech. All 4-H’ers receive a special 4-H participation pin. First, second, and third place winners receive additional recognition at Rock Eagle. Students will also receive recognition at a special 4-H Awards Program in February.

Who? & Where? Any 4-H’er in the 4th, 5th or 6th grade is eligible. Child must be 9 years old.(Competitions for 7th - 12th grade 4-H’ers are held at another time.)Rock Eagle 4-H Center, the largest 4-H center in the world. Rock Eagle is located in Eatonton approximately 90 miles from Columbia County. Transportation is provided by Columbia County school buses. Chaperones are 4-H staff and certified & screened volunteers.

When? November 1-2, 2018: Departure to Rock Eagle will be from a centralized location in Columbia County around 3:30 pm on Friday. When students arrive, they will get a chance to settle into their cabin for night. After, students will leave for their nighttime activities including a dance with a DJ, a pizza party dinner, and recreation activities. A concession stand will also be open that night to purchase a variety of snacks and drinks.

Registration: Cost is only $35! Registration is online only through Eventbrite. Registration opens on September 1 and closes on October 9. Additional details on how to register are located under details area for the event.

1. When you register online you will be asked to list your top 5 project area choices. Look over the topics and decided which five will be your top choices. Write those down so you can select them when registering through Eventbrite. A picture of the topics is located below. Please visit georgia4h.org/programs/project -achievement/cloverleaf-project-achievement-grades-4-6/ for more details on each project. You can also e-mail kmcody@uga.edu to request a copy be sent to you.

2. Having a hard time choosing? First, think about what specific topic you want to present about and see what that topic might fit under from the categories listed below. Examples: How a car engine works --> Engineering and Mechanics, How to prevent heatstroke --> Health, Creating a family budget --> Time and Money Management, Day of the Dead Celebration --> International

3. When registering, please read the project area choices carefully. Some project do not require a speech or posters but instead require a 4 minute performance, a cooking demonstration, only a speech, or the creation of an item. These projects have different rules and score cards. Know what you are signing up for. Performing Arts areas require an audition on October 3rd.

4. No live animals or weapons are allowed during presentations. More info on each area can be found at https://georgia4h.org/programs/project-achievement/cloverleaf-project-achievement-grades-4-6/

5. There are limits on how many students can be in each project area. Areas such as sports, arts, crafts, horses, rabbits, and history fill up quickly. Students will be assigned one of their choices based on availability. The earlier you register the more likely you are to get the project area you want.

Performing Arts Projects are the only ones that require an audition. Auditions for all performing arts projects will be held at the Columbia County Extension/4-H office on Thursday, October 3rd from 3 to 5:30 pm. Please call the office by October 1st to reserve a 20 minute audition time. All performances must be between 2-4 minutes long. All music, lyrics, costumes, and routines must abide by the 4-H Code of Conduct. If you are auditioning for Performing Arts Vocal, please bring at least 2 or more song choices when you come in to audition.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 8th for our mandatory DPA Orientation meeting at the Evans Library Auditorium from 6-7:30 pm.

DPA Orientation Meeting: At orientation check-in, your child will receive their project topic so they can begin working on their demonstration. Please make every effort to be at this orientation. Both returning and new DPA participants need to attend this meeting along with a parent or another adult. We will go over important info and tips regarding writing a speech and creating winning posters. We will also go into detail about the weekend's events, what your child needs to pack, how to travel with props and posters, etc. A reminder e-mail will be sent as orientation become closer. In that e-mail will be TWO forms that must be completed beforehand and turned in at orientation. These forms will be your ticket to the meeting in October.

We will have ONE make-up DPA orientation at our office in Appling on Thursday, October 17th from 6-7:30 pm. This is not an additional meeting date to choose from. This meeting is only for those who can truly not attend the 1st meeting at the Evans library. We have VERY LIMITED space at our office. Our biggest room only seats about 45 people. We usually have over 150 students who attend Cloverleaf DPA. If you can absolutely not attend the first meeting, please contact Tara Gibson at tgibson@columbiacountyga.gov to let us know that you will be at the meetings on October 17th.
