Description

DNSSec to TLS: A Primer on Transport Security

The internet is an increasingly integral part of our lives, and to an ever-increasing extent it is important to ensure that what we do online isn't sniffed or manipulated. When performing online banking we want to make sure our details are kept safe and using a messenger service, we want to ensure no one is stood in the middle of our connection editing our messages. In order to validate what we do online is kept private and remains authentic, a number of protocols have been developed to help keep our data safe as it's transported around the internet. This talk will open up the security protocols of the internet and explain how technologies like IPSec, DNSSec, TLS (formerly SSL) HSTS and CAA work.

Would you like a Cyberattack with your Toast?

From security cameras to traffic lights, an increasing amount of appliances we interact with on a daily basis are internet connected. IoT (Internet-of-Things) devices allow for everyday appliances to expose their functionality over the internet. These technologies inherit many attack vectors that appear in other internet connected devices, however the low-powered hardware-centric nature of IoT systems presents them with unique security threats. Towards the end of last year the internet saw massive Denial-of-Service attacks, aimed at taking high-profile websites offline, originating from internet-connected security cameras. Engineers building IoT devices must take additional precautions to ensure they do not implement security anti-patterns when addressing new problems, this talk will discuss four substantial security anti-patterns that have been used by real Internet-of-Things devices and the steps everyday users can take to help mitigate them.

About the Speaker

Junade Ali is a software engineer who is specialised in computer security and software architecture. Currently, Junade works at Cloudflare as a polymath, and helps make the Internet more secure and faster; prior to this he was a technical lead at some of the UK's leading digital agencies before moving into architecting software for mission-critical road-safety systems. Junade remains engaged in the academic computer science community and produces research on computer security and combinatorics.

Cloudflare Performance Meetup: Building the Cloudflare Network & Acceleration 101

Register

Building the Cloudflare Network

Cloudflare operates in 118+ data centers around the world, using a global Anycast network. This talk discusses the behind-the-scenes operation of Cloudflare; from interconnecting with ISPs and routing traffic across the internet, to identifying attacks and processing over 10 trillion log lines a month.

Web Acceleration 101

The load time of your website not only affects your search engine rankings, but is also correlated to the conversion rate on your site; Kyle Rush from the 2011 Obama for America campaign site showed a 3 second page load speed improvement increased on-site donations by 14% (resulting in over $34 million in donations). With websites now being accessed from an ever more diverse range of devices and platforms, it’s vital your online presence remains fast across the board.

This talk will cover the realities of modern web acceleration and the best practice you can use to speed up your online presence; using caching, modern web protocols and on-site optimisations.
