Description

Spend an evening with award-winning Nevada author and humorist, Michael Branch, then experience the Libraries’ newest exhibit Closer to the Land: Environment and Ecology in Nevada. Plan to laugh as Branch shares his unique musing and writings on life in the western Great Basin Desert. Following Branch’s reading, join University Libraries for a tour of Closer to the Land with the exhibit’s Chief Curator, Edan Strekal. SEATING IS LIMITED. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will take place inside the University of Nevada, Reno's Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center's Leonard Reading Room located on the 4th floor (MIKC 422) of the building. Parking details to be shared closer to the date of the event.

About Michael Branch:

Michael Branch is Professor of Literature and Environment and University Foundation Professor of English at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is co-founder and past president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment and co-founder and series co-editor of the University of Virginia Press book series Under the Sign of Nature: Explorations in Ecocriticism. He has published nine books and more than 200 articles, essays, and reviews. Mike is the recipient of the Western Literature Association awards for both creative writing and humor writing, the Ellen Meloy Desert Writers Award, and the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame Silver Pen Award. His recent books areRaising Wild (2016), ‘The Best Read Naturalist’: Nature Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson(2017), Rants from the Hill (2017), and How to Cuss in Western (2018). He is currently working on a new book called Hunting for Jackalope.

About Closer to the Land and Edan Strekal:

Closer to the Land: Environment and Ecology in Nevada Chief Curator, Edan Strekal will lead a tour of the exhibit, which focuses on the contrasting environments found in Nevada and the Great Basin, and the relationship of the environment with its living inhabitants including humans, animals, and plants. The exhibit explores Nevada’s diverse landscapes and wildlife populations through written and visual materials from the University Libraries Special Collections and University Archives’ extensive holdings of environmental collections. It also features three-dimensional objects including skulls, specimens, and taxidermied mounts courtesy of the University of Nevada, Reno Museum of Natural History.

Strekal, a lifelong Nevada resident, and former Archivist in the Special Collections and University Archives department and chairman of the City of Reno’s Historical Resources Commission, has been published in Nevada Magazine, Nevada Historical Society Quarterly, and has had work featured in the Political History of Nevada book.
