Event description

Description

Undeniably the most beguiling Halloween party of the season, Spektral Quartet’s Costumed Soirée at the Downey Mansion is a heady concoction of Downton Abbey-era dress-up, 19th-century cocktails, and some of the choicest classical music in all of Chicago.

Guests are invited to role-play as their favorite Modernist (Frank Lloyd Wright, Virginia Woolf, Pablo Picasso), Downton Abbey character (The Dowager Countess, dead Matthew Crawley), or early 20th-century celebrity (Charlie Chaplin, Florence Nightingale, Al Capone) while sipping on era-specific drinks.

As the centerpiece of the evening, the Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet takes the stage for selections from Arnold Schoenberg’s take-no-prisoners Quartet No. 1 and Brahms’s stormy Quartet in C minor, Op. 51. No. 1. Between numbers, a Chicago improv luminary acting as Sigmund Freud will invite willing audience members onto the onstage couch to perform 100% unlicensed psychoanalysis.

Spektral Quartet’s new CLOSE ENCOUNTERS series is chamber music as it was intended to be heard: up close, with friends, and with a drink or two at the ready. There will be no Halloween party this year quite like it.
