Program Description

Over the past year the entire world has suffered the effects of the pandemic. In addition to the actual illness and loss of loved ones, community members and national and international leaders, we have also experienced myriad personal losses and deprivations. These include the loss of our feeling of invulnerability, the loss of personal freedom, the loss of closeness and the ability to touch and be with many we love. The changes in our lives have been beyond anything we could have imagined and the results of these changes are just beginning to be realized.

In this workshop, we will discuss the effects of the global pandemic on all of us especially in regard to grief, loss and mourning. The particular ways that we have experienced grief will be examined against normal grief processes, and COVID-specific barriers to mourning will be outlined. The results of a recent survey regarding the effects of the pandemic on mental health practitioners conducted by the presenter will be summarized and discussed. Potential long-term effects of this COVID time and the subsequent changes clinicians and clients alike will make in their lives will be considered, and adaptive means of coping and ideas for clinician self-care will be explored.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe normal processes of grief and mourning;
  2. List 2 or more ways the pandemic has affected the processes of grief and mourning;
  3. Name 2 or more ways in which the COVID pandemic has affected mental health practitioners in particular.
