Morning Workshop

Love, Work, and Play: Redefining Mental Health
Friday, November 10, 2017
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Workshop Presenter: Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D., ABPP

Workshop Description

Date: Friday, November 10, 2017
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Location:
Trinity Memorial Church
22nd and Spruce Streets
Philadelphia, PA 19103

In recent decades, therapists have witnessed a troubling shift towards the “industrialization of psychotherapy,” in which psychological treatment is defined by specific techniques aimed at reduction of measurable symptoms. Although technical interventions to relieve overt symptoms are important, we have lost focus on the overall growth process in therapy and on the qualities of a healing professional relationship that foster it. Keeping the emphasis on clinical applications, Dr. McWilliams reframes clinical aims as involving time-honored mental health goals: love, work, play, secure attachment, affect tolerance, sense of agency, and other “vital signs” of therapeutic progress.

Learning Objectives

This workshop will help participants:

  1. Enumerate three socio-cultural influences on current conceptions of “the good life;”
  2. Contrast categorical, descriptive diagnoses with inferential, dimensional conceptualizations;
  3. Identify therapeutic goals that help clients attain their healthiest potentials;
  4. Describe clinical uses of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, 2nd Ed. (Guilford, 2017) for therapists of all orientations.

This is a vignette-based workshop focusing on the issues that generate the most questions to local, state, and national ethics committees.  Topics include working with high profile clients, suicidal clients, and end of life issues. The vignettes are designed to promote discussion, and participants will engage in the application of ethical decision making to the practice of professional psychology. Participants are invited to discuss ethical dilemmas from their own practices. In addition, the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct is being revised. This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss proposed and desired revisions to the Code.

Learning Objectives

This workshop will help participants:

  1. Identify the relevant ethical principles related to a variety of ethical dilemmas;
  2. Evaluate the current Ethics Code;
  3. Improve ethical decision making skills.

Trinity Church provides limited on-street free parking, and there are several fee-based garages nearby. If you need parking assistance, they offer a parking app called Park Me to help find a parking space, which you can find here.
