Description

The course is designed for the expeditioner that has training and experience in Wilderness Medicine. While climbers and mountaineers are encouraged and will benefit from this course, advanced practitioners will find the information concise and informative.

This course focuses on special medical problems associated with hypoxia at higher altitudes and freezing temperatures, trauma due to avalanches, falls, crevasses on glaciers and other terrain hazards. In addition, climber specific considerations such as suspension syndrome are covered.

We take students through the most important medical skills and knowledge required for this special environment

  • Compiling a mountain medical kit
  • Choosing & packing personal equipment
  • Thermal injury – hypothermia, frostbite, cold water immersion
  • Acute mountain sickness – prevention and treatment
  • Trauma due to mountain and vertical environments
  • Portable altitude chambers

First aid, extended care, transport, pre-hospital, clinic and hospital care for mountain terrain related injuries will be covered.

Curriculum will also include altitude safety, altitude risk reduction, recent recommendations on altitude-related illnesses prophylaxis, rescue strategies and ethics
