Event description

Description

Climb Out of the Darkness is an annual event sponsored by Postpartum Support International. It is the largest event used to increase awareness of perinatal mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, OCD, psychosis, and PTSD. Usually, it is held as close to the summer solstice as possible — as this is the longest day of the year — so that the most light possible can shine upon the teams and supporters participating in the climbs.

The Tennessee chapter of PSI, which was formed in May 2018, is divided into regions with their own climb events. A climb is typically a walk through a park, but Middle Tennessee has decided to be a little different with their event this year.

We are a relatively new nonprofit in the state. We have growing to do, though we do grow every day in many ways. We are in the business of planting seeds across the Midstate: seeds for activism, seeds for education, seeds for support, and more. Because of this, we want to get involved in our local community by literally planting seeds and giving back to our community while doing so.

On June 1st, we will be volunteering and fundraising at the BELL Garden. There, we will meet up with Christina Crawford, the manager of the garden, to connect with the soil and each other. Christina will lead us through planting, tending, and harvesting plants as well as introducing us to the chickens on campus — if we do harvest, we will have the option to take our vegetables home! Because it is a community garden, children are welcome to participate in the gardening process as well. Christina will be leading special programming for children as well, teaching them about the germination process of seeds and how to tend chickens.

The garden is ADA compliant and has raised beds as well for people who have a difficult time bending to work the soil. There is an air-conditioned portable with a refrigerator for cool drinks, and we’ll have cold brew coffee, chai, and bottled water available for those interested. There will be a quiet area for feeding babies. The area is serviced by a bus stop, so it is easily accessible, and there is plenty of parking! In the event of bad weather, there is also a greenhouse we can use to plant seeds.

During the event, there will be booths from sponsors, door prizes, and silent auction for additional fundraising in the portable. Any funds collected will go directly to PSI Tennessee with most funds remaining in the Midstate to help grow our programs and educational opportunities locally, especially for our rural outreach.

There is no cost for participation in the event, though we heavily encourage individual and team fundraising! We also encourage people to come back to BELL to continue gardening through Hands On Nashville every week!

A limited number of tables for sponsors are available — please eMail us at psitnmidstate@gmail.com to discuss these as well as silent auction items.
