About this event
People today want to know what companies are doing to reduce their negative impacts and increase positive impacts on the environment, but the information available is disparate and difficult to compare.
We are celebrating Open Data Day 2020 by inviting the public to discuss and collect publicly available corporate climate data in a way that will create the most impact - by making it open and accessible to citizens and civil society organizations, and creating new insights on where specific companies stand.
Organized by WikiRate and Plan A, and hosted by Ecosia, the event is structured as a workshop and data sprint, with the aim to bring together experts and individuals interested in environmental research, climate change, open data, policy making and more.
We will engage in a discussion centered around the project "Understanding the disclosure and environmental performance of the top greenhouse gas emitting companies", and the challenges and opportunities this research presents.
After outlining and discussing these, we will form small groups to conduct research on some of the top 100 companies and their impacts including GHG emissions, renewable energy use and climate policies. Each of the small groups’ work will contribute to one overarching research project, with results will be presented and discussed at the end.
Program (14:00-17:00, plus socializing):
- Welcoming remarks
- Introduction to WikiRate and Open Data Research
- Introduction to the challenge for this Data Sprint
- Comments from experts in the room & discussion
- Data sprint - group research
- Share findings from Groups and Collective
- Feedback and Q&A
- Socializing and refreshments
Free and open data can help us to understand companies’ impacts and to fight climate change. That is why all the data gathered that day will be free and accessible for all to use and download through the WikiRate open data platform under a Creative Commons 4.0 license.
