Event description
Climate Change vs Economic Growth – A Zero Sum Game?

About this Event

“How dare you?” asked Greta Thunberg and questions the possibility to achieve the Paris climate goals with “business as usual” aka the continuing of the growth led economic model. Is she and the other young activists right?

Record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought have fueled a series of massive bushfires across Australia. We also learned about the wildfires in the Amazon and abnormal strength of hurricanes. Let alone the melting of glaciers and rising sea levels, a risk any region with a long shoreline is very aware of.

Hardly anyone questions anymore that the changing climate of the planet and the remarkable growth in human numbers and riches both stem from the combustion of billions of tones of fossil fuel to produce industrial power, electricity, transport, heating and, more recently, computation. However, do we have to change our way of life to save the planet?

In this meeting, we will discuss:

1. Does reigning in global warming require a departure from the growth led economic model or would such a system change diminish our best hopes to mitigate or handle the challenges ahead?

2. Are we trapped in a tragedy of the commons and will our individual, conscious behavior only allow others to pollute more? What are policy options that are socially fair and the least impairing our liberties and personal freedoms?

3. Will advances in the sharing economy and the future of work (music streaming vs. buying CDs, remote working vs. commuting to the office, etc.) have a meaningful impact on the idea to achieve more with less?

Fee: It's free to attend, but we would buy a drink as a courtesy to the venue.

Meeting Format:

The host will start with introduction about the community and the topic. Thereafter and depending on how many people will attend, we split into sub-groups of 4-5 people for more detailed discussions. Within each subgroup we will introduce ourselves (name, profession, hobby and fun-fact) and begin a free-flowing discussion on the theme. That's why it is important to prepare and read suggested materials prior the meeting. Questions, new paths for discussion, personal experience, and opinions are highly encouraged. We conclude the event with everyone sharing their takeaways on the subject.

The Economic Club of Hong Kong is a community of intellectually curious people. Events are organized by a group of passionate volunteers.
