Description

Learn what you and your family can do to make sustainable choices as a consumer and get involved in climate action! The time is now and change starts with you!

This action-focused event is the kick-off event to Climathon Honolulu, the first climate action solutions hackathon in Honolulu. We're part of a global climathon community: 300 cities, 1M participants, showing that global action starts locally!

This event will feature short talks designed to help you make sustainable decisions everyday, consume more responsibly, and get involved in local climate solutions. You will also have the opportunity to engage with experts, ask questions, and be part of this important conversation to create a more resilient community.

Session Topics include:

Making Fair & Sustainable Coffee Choices

  • Kelleigh Stewart is the co-founder of Big Island Coffee Roasters and Espresso Bites. She’s a licensed Arabica Q Grader (international arabica quality judge), and Hawaii 40 under 40. You’ll learn the difference between organic, Fair Trade, direct trade and specialty coffee and leave with a list reputable coffee companies to buy from. Big Island Coffee Roasters is an award winning farm and roaster whose mission is to share exceptional coffees from all regions of Hawaii and help our coffee industry lead with authenticity and innovation.

Safer Chemical Disposal with Greg Perry

  • Common products you use at home (such as insecticides, swimming pool chemicals, lighter fluid, and more) require special handling when they become waste. The dangers of handling these substances may not be apparent immediately, but improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to you and your family’s health.
  • Greg has 31 years of proven environmental management and construction experience in managing remedial and site restoration projects throughout the Pacific Rim.

Civic Engagement for Climate Action

  • Rafael Bergstrom is a leading Climate and civic activist, and the Executive Director of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. He started the successful program, Civics is Sexy, which helps mobilize hundreds of citizens each year to become more actively engaged with city and state government.

Zero Waste Home & Body Care with Pono Home Essentials

  • Scott Cooney is the founder of Pono Home and Pono Home Essentials, a local zero waste body-care company. Making a difference where you can means understanding your sphere of influence, along with the impacts associated with your home, office, and life. The most empowering feeling is knowing that you're stronger than plastic and fossil fuels, that you do have a choice to make things happen, no matter what your financial situation is. Scott from Pono Home will show you a number of easy, money saving, and health-improving habits and strategies you can incorporate today and for the rest of your life that empower you and make the world a better place.

Making Powerful Climate Commitments in your Kitchen

  • Andrea Bertoli is a chef, educator, and wellness writer with Vibrant Wellness Journal. Her talk will focus on why and how your everyday food choices have power: learn more about the importance of reducing food waste, get zero-waste shopping tips, and learn why eating more plant foods is a key solution to climate change action.

Eco Rotary Club of Kaka'ako with Steve Mazur

  • Guests will learn about another approach to helping communities prevent and face with climate change issues. Steve moved to Hawaii in 2008 and completed his MBA at UH Shidler School of Business. At that time, he began working on Hawaii's first electric vehicle charging infrastructure under a federal grant with a startup and his interest in moving the world away from oil was solidified. After that, he began working at RevoluSun on commercial solar development and have remained active as a developer, activist, and volunteer. Currently I am helping launch Hawaii's first Rotary Club that is specifically focussed on climate change and environmental sustainability.
Zero-Waste Living with Nicole Chatterson

  • Your waste-stream and your carbon foot-print are intimately connected. We'll dig into this connection and present tangible ways you can go zero waste for the climate!
  • Nicole is director and co-founder of Zero Waste Oʻahu and also works for the University of Hawaiʻi Sustainability Office. She has been a part of the zero waste movement for over a decade and is inspired to see us moving towards a waste-free future!
