Description

Back in 2013 I visited Istanbul and Ephesus, Turkey near the small town of Selcuk - too small to even have a hotel.

We had dinner the first night at Mehmet and Ali Baba's House, specializing in delicious homemade kebabs. We were served and entertained by Ali Baba and Mehmet outside as their wives prepared our meals inside. We had a great meal and returned a few times. I mentioned near the end of the final meal hat you could not go 100 ft without someone trying to sell you a rug in Turkey - even in tiny Selcuk!

Ali Baba casually pointed to the rug shop next to his restaurant, mentioned that it was his place and continued chatting with us. I gave a chance to the only guy in Turkey who had not tried to sell me a rug.

Well, his rugs were amazing, the selection was incredible, the prices were fair and he remained helpful since I knew little and was very low pressure. My budget was limited and I left with small rug sporting a pattern I had never seen before called a "Noah's Ark".

Ali Baba had told us he loved the US, visited frequently and would contact me. Over a year later, he came to visit and I had wonderful rug party! With a lot of hardwood floor to cover I bought several really beautiful rugs at great prices. We all had fun and it was nice to get input from friends and neighbors about what rugs they liked. Some of them are in the photo collage on the invite.

We are hosting Ali Baba again next month, on Saturday February 2nd and we hope you will join us. You will enjoy him and the rugs, learn as much about Turkey and rugs as you want to and also have a chance to check out a very cool art glass collection - all in a beautiful rural area that is closer than you think!

Most of Ali Baba's rugs are locally made in eastern Turkey, but some come from Turkmenistan, Kazahakistan and Beluchistan. In addition to hand-knotted rugs he also has kilim and soumak (flat woven) rugs and embroideries in wool and silk. There are traditional medallion, floral and geometric patterns. However, he also has modern patterns made with the same care as the finest traditional rugs. Like us, he lets customers their rugs trade out or up in the future, which is pretty nice.

We are also supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in memory of my brother Randy, who died of lymphoma last year and other family members and friends stricken with blood cancers. If anyone buys anything, we'll make sure any contributions are matched.

Come join us. You'll love it!
