Clean Up SoHo Announces Launch Event

Group to Celebrate Programs from Local Residents, Businesses, and City Council

In just a short time, @CleanUpSoHo has had many “wins” thanks to local residents, businesses, and the City Council. The group is announcing a launch party to celebrate the progress.

Since November 2016, this informal network has driven many improvements to SoHo’s streets. Clean Up SoHo has ordered 28 high-capacity garbage cans resulting from fundraising efforts throughout 2017. The goal is to acquire 100 new, larger cans at SoHo intersections.

Clean Up SoHo would like to thank local residents, businesses and retail investors for the sponsorships that made this possible including: 60 Guilders, Premier Equities, CBRE, SoHo Alliance, Bloomingdale’s, Goldman properties, 210 Lafayette, 133 Wooster, & 458 Broome.

In addition to adding receptacles, Council Member Margaret Chin awarded $60,000 to fund six months of supplemental street funding by Wildcat Services Corporation. This coincided perfectly with Clean Up SoHo’s grassroots initiative of supporting street cleaning. The group is cost effective and efficient compared to the NYC BID model, which allocates 40% - 50% of their annual budgets to administrative overhead. By contrast, Clean Up SoHo is totally supported locally; 100% of proceeds go toward keeping SoHo’s streets clean.

To realize these achievements, Clean Up SoHo spent the first half of 2017 meeting with supplemental street cleaning vendors. This involved requesting estimates for certain areas at specific frequencies. Wildcat was chosen because of its excellent responsiveness, fantastic price, and enthusiasm for what Clean Up SoHo was working to achieve. Concurrently, Clean Up SoHo initiated a dialogue with the Department of Sanitation, ultimately opting to participate in DSNY’s Sponsor-A-Basket program.

In October 2017, the owner of Anyway Café’, Varon Barrio-Carillo, offered to provide space where Wildcat will erect a staging shed for storing street cleaning equipment and materials. Wildcat has agreed to pick up and assemble a new shed, which means cleaner streets very soon! Many thanks are extended to Margaret Chin and her staff for the generous grant of council funds that initiated this service.

A second letter of intent will be submitted to DSNY for the approval of the second batch of high-capacity trash baskets. If you would like to contribute and sponsor a basket, please reach out to Danielle@sohostrut.com.

The launch party is scheduled for Sunday, December 10th from 7-8:30pm at Ray Ban at 116 Wooster Street. Local residents, business owners and stakeholders are invited for an open house to learn more about the project and continue momentum. RSVP is required at CleanUpSoho.Eventbrite.com.
