Event description

Description

Goal: To learn how to create engagement and empathy within the player while merging it with rewarding gameplay.

Class Description

Let's talk about feelings! How do you get your players to care about your world, characters, and story? How do you create emotional and meaningful engagement with your audience? Many games take it for granted that their players care when it actually requires lots of testing, iteration, and tears to make that connection happen. Adventure games, RPGs, platformers or shooters - if you've ever wanted to create a game with elements of story and narrative, then this is the class for you!

Featured Topics:

  • What it means to care about a character, versus just knowing them.

  • How player agency can foster empathy and connection

  • Knowing the right moment for an emotional payoff

  • What "feels right" versus what "works right"

Instructor Bio

Dave Gilbert has been interested in adventure games ever since 1986 when his mother made the mistake of buying him a copy of Infocom’s Wishbringer. In 2006, he decided that making games was too much fun to do anything else for a living, and formed Wadjet Eye Games to do just that. Currently, there are 15 games under the Wadjet Eye label; including the Shivah, the Blackwell series, Gemini Rue, Technobabylon, Shardlight, and Primordia. You can learn more about these games (and buy them, if you are so inclined) at www.wadjeteyegames.com.
