Featured Workshop - Drawing and Cartooning with Mike Lyman of Magnum Arts (ages 8+)

Mike Lyman, whose first graphic novel has just been published online, has been teaching cartooning and drawing for teens for over ten years in three states; his classes at the Morean Arts Center sell out on a regular basis. Students of all ages draw what they want to draw, focusing on areas where they want to improve, with no pressure to keep up, and students often learn from each other in a fun, non-judgmental atmosphere. The work of famous artists and artistic concepts are introduced, and students are able to experiment with colored markers, colored pencils, charcoal pencils and watercolors. Students who are ready are taught more advanced techniques, such as perspective, shading, adding realism and detail to their drawings, different art methods, and a whole lot more. Plenty of visual references are used to inspire and engage students, bringing their skills and confidence to the next level.

The drawing class is divided into two one-hour blocks, but students can attend the first or second one, they can overlap, or stay and draw the entire time. It's basically an open session, although it is recommended that students choose one of the two hours to be present for instruction.

All students will need a sketchbook, drawing pencils and whatever drawing tools they like to use. For information contact the instructor directly at magnumcreate@gmail.com or 727-492-0135. Visit his website at www.magnumarts.net.
