Event description

Description

"AN UNCOMPROMISING WORK OF ART." - American Cinematographer

Join us for Milford Thomas' award-winning, silent film, CLAIRE, accompanied by a live quartet of strings and percussion. This event is presented in conjunction with The B Complex's B-Fore B-Now "Retrospectare" exhibition. The film will be screened in the gallery among the exhibited artwork of artists in residence from 1999-2019.

CLAIRE is loosely based on the ancient Japanese fable, Kaguyhime. This version tells the story of a charming elderly male couple in the rural 1920s South (Short Mountain Radical Faeries JIM FERGUSON and MISH P. DeLIGHT ) that find an enchanting girl from the moon on their farm (Blast-Off Burlesque’s TONIET GALLEGO) and adopt her as their own.

Cardboard, wires, and all, CLAIRE is an homage to early cinema when moving pictures were CGI-free and not less than a bit naive when it was the image, the music, and the moviegoer’s own catalog of experiences which came together for an intimate journey through the dark.

Atlanta filmmaker Milford Thomas' CLAIRE is a 53-minute black and white silent film shot on an antique hand-crank 35mm (Mitchell Standard) camera by Jonathan Mellinger. The film toured internationally, opening festivals in Milan, Brussels, Montreal and the U.S.

Originally composed for an 11-piece orchestra by Anne Richardson, this performance features an arrangment for a quartet by Brian Mitchell. Featured Musicians include, Kerren Berz, violin; Tania Maxwell-Clements, viola; Mary Horst, cello; Peggy Benkeser, percussion
