Civil Society Virtual COFFEE CLUB - establishing your organisation as a refugee and opening a community garden with Saabat Gallery CIC

About this event

Come join us for our bi-monthly virtual coffee and chat! This time, we’ll (1) hear from #CommunityChampions in action and (2) discuss your financial and accounting challenges.

What are the challenges that come with establishing oneself as a refugee, and how can they be overcome? Azad and his colleagues at Saabat Gallery CIC will discuss their lived experience as Iraqi refugees in the Redcar, UK, and update us on their community garden project which started a few months ago. This is a great climate action project - linked to community cohesion and the celebration of creativity in a challenging urban environment. This community garden project is particularly close to our hearts, as we carried out community research that helped secure the grant funding for it - as part of our flagship initiative, Steps to Recovery. We will be running some free trainings for our Steps to Recovery network. In preparation for this,

  1. Finance and accounting can be challenging for charitable organisations with limited resources. We will also be joined by Jackie Bird from Community Accounting Lancashire CIC, fielding questions and queries about your financial and accounting challenges.
  2. We will also take this coffee club as an opportunity to share for the first time our report on the Steps to Recovery support programme one year on. ! We’ll reflect on what has been accomplished through the programme, and what has worked well, and we’d welcome your views on how you can be better supported as a Community Champion. In fact, we are running a survey to see how to further develop the programme - please give us your views (only five very quick questions): Civil Society Peer Support & Wellbeing - Steps to Kinder Communities SURVEY

About Saabat Gallery CIC

Established in 2014 by Iraqi artist/sculptor and Teesside University graduate Azad Karim Mohammed, Saabat Gallery is a community art gallery in Redcar, in the North East of England. Saabat Gallery focuses on strengthening people’s mental health and wellbeing and tackling climate change, social inequality and social fractures by bringing learning and promoting life skills and creativity. The organisation aims to drive forward local change and help people find their own creative solutions to the pressing problems they face. They do this through teaching about art as a means to impact our environment.

Saabat Gallery’s community garden project started in October 2021. It comprises a community kitchen, a performance stage, a domestic repair shop and spaces for gardening. The community garden aims to create a space for gathering, promote a healthy lifestyle, better well being through gardening and help members of the community gain new skills whilst creating volunteering and job opportunities.

About Community Accounting Lancashire CIC

About our coffee clubs:

The Civil Society Consulting coffee club is an informal, chatty event. Alongside the @CivilSocietyCIC team, everyone will be sharing their learning with you and giving tips as we all move forward towards recovery. To help us prepare for a good flow, please send over any question you already know you would like to discuss here: constance@civilsocietyconsulting.co.uk. (We will also be answering questions as/when they come up during the session, this is just to help things run more smoothly!)

If you can’t make it this time, stay tuned via @CivilSocietyCIC to hear about the next Civil Society Consulting Virtual Coffee Club in October 2022.
