Event description

Description

ORGANISED BY SIMMONS & SIMMONS

IN COLLABORATION WITH JUSTICE WITHOUT BORDERS

Singapore lawyers, join Simmons & Simmons and Justice Without Borders on 31 January, 2019 for our CPD workshop on recovering damages in hard-to-measure claims of migrant workers who have faced physical or sexual abuse in Singapore.

Substantiating and quantifying damages can be difficult, especially for patterns of abuse that leave few marks but still cause incredible emotional harm. Such abuses are, unfortunately, not uncommon among migrant domestic workers who are often left without recourse.

This workshop aims to equip lawyers with practical tools to prove and quantify damages in pursuing these types of claims on behalf of migrant worker clients, with an eye towards compensation that more fully addresses the injuries suffered. A hands-on case simulation session will also offer a glimpse into the legal and practical challenges of seeking redress in these cases.

Presenters

  • Amanda Lees, Partner, Simmons & Simmons

  • Justin Kwek, Supervising Associate, JWS Asia Law Corporation

  • Douglas MacLean, Executive Director, Justice Without Borders

  • Shalini Jayaraj, Head of Singapore Office, Justice Without Borders

This is a new elementary level course intended for lawyers with an interest in migrant workers' rights. We welcome both locally qualified and international lawyers, including civil litigators and in-house counsel.

Attendance will be capped at 40 participants to ensure active participation, so please save your spot as soon as possible.

Registration by Monday 21 January 2019 would be greatly appreciated.

More details of the event can be found on SILE's website, here.
