Event description

Description

Female athletes in many Hawaii public schools aren't getting the equality that federal law promises them under Title IX. A recent story by Honolulu Civil Beat exposed stark gender inequities when it comes to high school athletics programs and facilities.

On April 27 we invite you to join us for a community conversation highlighting this particular example, which prompted the ACLU of Hawaii to issue a demand letter to the state DOE requesting that female athletes in public schools have access to the same facilities as male athletes. Together, we’ll discuss the outcome of recent discussions, any actionable steps and the broader implications for local education programs and athletics under the federal law known as Title IX.

Panelists:

  • Khara Jabola-Carolus, Executive Director of Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women

  • Suevon Lee, Reporter at Civil Beat

  • Mackenzie Ozoa, high school junior

  • Josh Wisch, Executive Director of ACLU of Hawaii

Wine and light refreshments will be served.

This event is in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii (ACLU) and the YWCA O’ahu.

This event is free and open to the public, but please RSVP in advance.

Paid parking is available at Alii Place and additional metered parking is available on Richards Street and Iolani Palace grounds. The event will be recorded and posted on Civil Beat's YouTube page shortly after the event.

By registering for this event, you'll receive a subscription to Civil Beat's free e-newsletter, the Morning Beat. And don't worry, we hate spam too! You can unsubscribe any time by clicking the link at the bottom of each email.
