Description

Civic Dialogue -- Twin Cities Gathering

In a context characterized by profound polarization, many of us are working to build, expand, and connect dialogue efforts as a means of fulfilling our institutions' civic missions. Toward that end, Minnesota Campus Compact is launching the Constitution Day Dialogue Initiative this September. Whether you intend to be involved in that particular initiative or simply want to add tools to your dialogue toolbox, please join us.

This gathering will include:

  • An overview of how to be involved in the 2018 Constitution Day Dialogue Initiative and how to access a mini-grant;

  • Discussion of key elements of effective dialogue planning, design, and practice with Avelino Mills-Novoa, former interim president of Minneapolis Community and Technical College, interim dean at St. Cloud State University, and assistant dean at the University of Minnesota's General College;

  • A train-the-trainer session on using Danielle Allen's Shared American Values exercise to ground civic dialogue;

  • Space to wrestle with questions and tension in dialogue work; and

  • A deep-dive into We the People... A Community Conversation to Understand the U.S. Constitution, in 10 Acts developed by Metropolitan State University's Matt Filner in collaboration with community members.

Campus teams or individual faculty, staff, and administrators may register through May 16, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. There is also an option to participate remotely in the We the People training via Zoom. Registration is free of charge to Minnesota Campus Compact members. Please choose either the in-person or the remote participant ticket option. With questions, contact Sinda Nichols at sinda@mncampuscompact.org or 612-436-2080.
