Civic Coffee Community Talk | Addressing Information Barriers to Serve Oakl...
Event Information
Description
Latino immigrants are the fastest growing community in Oakland. While many of Oakland's Latino residents have roots in Oakland and the U.S. spanning generations, the City has continued to receive new immigrants from Latin America. Our newest neighbors include a rapidly growing population of Mam indigenous people from Guatemala who speak little to no English or Spanish. As a result, our methods for doing inclusive outreach in the Oakland community require new and fresh approaches.
Oakland native Madeleine Bair (Twitter: @madbair) is building a two-way reporting platform that will engage and inform local Latino immigrants and provide a channel to anonymously share questions, concerns, and anecdotes about immigration, housing, health, education, and more.
Learn more about her in-depth interviews, research and her information need assessment of Latino immigrants in Oakland, California. Her findings include information about:
- Media perceptions and news consumption habits among the Oakland Latino community
- Indigenous Mam information needs
- Insights and suggestions on ways to effectively reach Oakland's growing Latino immigrant residents.
Please join us for this important presentation and conversation.
Coffee and light breakfast pastries will be served.
