Event description

Description

A 90-minute walking tour of the capital city’s 200+ year history. Starting at the southwest corner of Broad and High, Columbus’ most historic intersection, the guided walk covers the architecture and stories of important highlights from the city’s frontier beginnings through its importance in the Civil War and into its modern-day role as the ever-growing Midwestern city with vibrant arts districts, walkable neighborhoods, and renaissance downtown. Beginning as a crossroads for Native American trails, then canals, the National Road, railroads, and the first connection of rail and air transcontinental flights in the 1920s, Columbus downtown buildings range from Beaux Arts to Gothic, Art Moderne to Greek Revival, Italianate to Arts and Crafts. Woven throughout the monumental and symbolic government and bank buildings, and the tucked-away architectural gems and outstanding public art pieces, are the stories of Columbus’ immigrant roots, natural disasters, and famous people.

Our entertaining tour guides are experts in history and architecture and look forward to walking with you! Tour route is approximately 1.5 miles. Tour is outside and focuses on building exteriors, however please bring your ID for possible entrance and quick visit to the Ohio Statehouse. Key tour features may include Huntington Bank Building, Wyandotte Building, LeVeque Tower, Palace Theatre, City Hall, Broad Street Bridge over the Scioto River, Ohio Judicial Center (Ohio Supreme Court), Vern Riffe Center for Government & the Arts, Lazarus Department Store, Beggs Building, Ohio Theatre, Ohio Statehouse and grounds, Bricker & Eckler, Columbus Dispatch buildings (old and new), Trinity Episcopal Church, Rhodes Tower, Pearl Alley, and 8 on the Square.
