Description

Join the City of West Hollywood Women's Leadership Conference Mini-Film Festival and The City of West Hollywood Human Rights Speakers Series for a special Women's History Month event on International Women's Day!

Girl Rising, the non-profit behind the global campaign for girls' education and empowerment, will debut a powerful new short film, Brave Girl Rising, a celebration of the hope, strength, and imagination of one girl determined to get her education despite the harsh realities of life in Dadaab, one of the world’s largest refugee camps.

Brave Girl Rising tells how a courageous girl, inspired by the magical dreams of her mother and the sisterhood of friends, succeeds in getting the education she deserves.

This powerfully emotional film is a collaboration with acclaimed Somali poet Warsan Shire (Beyonce’s Lemonade) and voiced by actor Tessa Thompson (Sorry to Bother You, Men in Black: International) and Golden Globe winner David Oyelowo, this short film is a testament to how hope and love can propel us beyond even the bleakest of circumstances.

Brave Girl Rising was made possible by:

The film was made in collaboration with The International Rescue Committee, whose Women’s Protection and Empowerment programs support Nasro in Dadaab refugee camp, and with support from the project's Founding Partner, Citi. To coincide with the film’s release, Girl Rising, IRC, and Citi are teaming up with HP and Amplifier to launch a major campaign that will include screening toolkits, curricula, take action guides and a street art initiative.
