Description

We invite you to visit the Water Resource Recovery Facility on October 19 at 11 am for an exciting opportunity.

Two exciting technologies will be piloted at the Water Resource Recovery Facility during the next few weeks, Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors (AnMBR) and Phosphorus Recovery. Both are important recent technological advances in biological wastewater treatment and this is your chance to come check them out.

An AnMBR works by using a membrane bioreactor in wastewater treatment. Sewage is filtered to separate effluent water from sludge. The sludge is then treated by bacteria which releases methane. This biogas can be stored and later used to generate electricity or heat. The energy created by an AnMBR can exceed the energy required to create it, making the process a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for treating wastewater.

The AnMBR will be on site at the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) for about 3 months. This will allow the City to learn about the operation and maintenance of these types of systems prior to the startup of a full-scale operation. Different startup and operation modes can be tested to establish a baseline operation for the future system. Additional information about the process can be found at this link https://www.gewater.com/products/zeeweed-500-membrane.

The second technology, algae based phosphorus recovery, will be piloted as an option to control magnesium ammonium phosphate, or struvite. Struvite can be a problem at the Water Resource Recovery Facility as it can form scales in equipment, clogging pipes, pumps, and other equipment.

As a possible solution, WRRF is having a photobioreactor (PBR) installed the week of October 16, 2017. The PBR will eliminate the introduction of struvite altogether by using phosphorus to cultivate algae, which can then be used by a broad range of industries.

WRRF is located at 1300 Market Ave SW. If you have questions, please email us at esd@grcity.us.

We hope to see you there!
