Description

Join Common Good City Farm as a 2018 City Farmer Volunteer! Volunteers will help with all aspects of running an urban farm, from planting, weeding and harvesting, to helping sell produce at our market, to helping with our youth education programs and events!

Registration has ended for our 2018 season, however there is still time to volunteer. If you'd like to join in one of the sessions listed below, please email Emily at info at commongoodcityfarm.org with your availability.

Volunteers who make less than a DC Living Wage (http://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/11001) are eligible to earn produce vouchers in exchange for their volunteer time ($5 voucher per hour worked). To sign up for this option, make sure to select it during registration and we'll ask you to submit proof of income or proof of eligibility for public benefits.

Different time slots will have different responsibilities, so you can choose what fits best for your interest and your schedule. We ask each volunteer to commit to coming weekly during the same time slot for at least 12 weeks and we have sessions starting every month.

Although tasks will change seasonally, see below to get an idea of what each session will involve (Please note- sessions that involve working with youth require completion of a background check).

Mondays 9:30-11: Assist with the Little Farmers toddler program. (starting in late April)

Tuesdays 4-7 pm: Assist the farm manager with all the tasks of the farm. Right now this includes building beds and getting the farm back in shape for spring planting

Wednesdays 9am-12pm: Assist the farm manager with all the tasks of the farm. Right now this includes building beds and getting the farm back in shape for spring planting. In a couple months this will be when we do our weekly harvest!

Wednesdays 1-4 pm: Volunteers will assist with preparations for the market: harvest and wash produce (if necessary), package produce, bring produce and equipment over to market, and set up market. (starting in June)

Wednesdays 3-7pm: Assist at our weekly market with check out and assist with distributing vouchers for the Produce Plus program (a program which allows eligible residents to receive $10 per week per market to purchase fruits and vegetables)

For this time slot, we ask volunteers to attend a Produce Plus training off site, but you are not required to come every week, we will have sign ups for each market.

Wednesdays 4:15-7:15: Assist with our LEAF youth program (teaching kids about food, farming, nutrition and preparing a snack with them) and help break down our weekly market.

Thursdays 9am-12pm: Assist with various farming tasks, help lead school field trips and help process leftover produce for our value added products later in the season.

Fridays 9am-12pm: Assist with various farming tasks and help set up and run a farm stand at a senior apartment building close to the farm.

Saturdays 9am-12pm:Assist the farm manager with all the tasks of the farm.

Sundays 3-6 pm: A combination of farm work and working with our LEAF youth program (teaching kids about food, farming, nutrition and preparing a snack with them).

If the time slot/ volunteer opportunity you are interested in is not listed as a ticket below, that means it will start later in the season, so make sure to check back! The first day of each session is training/orientation and is required- if you can not attend the first day, please wait to sign up for a later session.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Our City Farmers program is for volunteers 18 years of age or older.

Can I sign up for multiple volunteer time slots?

You are welcome to come volunteer with us for more than one of the time slots, however consistent weekly attendance is very important to the success of our volunteer program so we ask that you consider how much time you can really commit to. In order to share the limited spaces available, we limit city farmers to 2 sessions per week.

If I like volunteering, can I continue after the 12 weeks?

Absolutely, we love to have our city farmers continue on with us for multiple parts of the season. Farm staff will check in throughout the session and can sign you up to continue on for longer.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Feel free to reach out to Emily at info@commongoodcityfarm.org if you have any questions.
